Feeling Fruity

July 5th, 2011

The great thing about this time of year is the abundance of luscious fruit available from the UK.  The strawberry season kicked off slightly earlier this year with the warm spring and we are now starting to get delicious gooseberries and raspberries.

All the better for us here at The Angel Bakery as we love to make the best of the seasonal produce and with the added advantage of having a stall next to Hayles Fruit Farm at Cirencester Farmers Market, we are spoilt for choice.

Back in the Spring we launched some new tasty treats, our Retro Bakes range. A range of delicious tarts and pies made to old English recipes.  Maids of Honour, Congress Tarts and Sambocade are just some of the baked treats available and are going down a storm at farmers markets and food festivals. And with Hayles’ new season redcurrants and blackcurrants now available we can’t wait to use them for our Muckymouth Tarts.

I am often asked why they are called Muckymouth tarts. These tasty little pastries derive their name from that age old problem that any child faces when picking sweet tasting fruits! If, like me as a child, you were ever sent out to pick blackberries from the hedgerows or blackcurrants from the garden you will know that inevitably you end up eating handfuls of the delicious fruits. No matter how much you protested at your innocence, there was always the tell-tale sign of fruit smeared chops, hence the Muckymouth!

All of the Retro Bakes range are made with a hand-made rich, shortcrust butter pastry and filled with an array of scrumptious fillings such as vanilla and lemon custards, rich almond frangipanes or jam-packed with fabulous fruits, making them the perfect treat or dessert.

A gorgeous Spring Wedding

March 30th, 2011

Last weekend The Angel Bakery supplied some delightful little fairy cakes for a spring wedding at an amazing venue near Evesham in Worcestershire, Dumbleton Hall.

This wonderful location was chosen by the lovely Wendy and Grant who approached The Angel Bakery to create some wedding cakes for their special day. Dumbleton Hall is set amidst its own beautiful old estate grounds overlooking the Vale of Evesham and the Cotswolds. This old hall has a real grandeur about it, with it’s own lake and immaculately manicured grounds. The sun was out and even the spring lambs had arrived on cue for a wonderful, magical day!

Wendy and Grant chose daffodil yellow, ivory and pale lavender as their colourscheme, encapsulating the wonderful colours of spring. They decided to go with dainty fairy cakes in vanilla and top it off with one of our cute little vanilla layer cakes.

We hope you both had a wonderful day!

Best wishes

Barnsley House Wedding

March 28th, 2011

One of the many great attributes to the Cotswolds are the wedding venues that are available to prospective brides and grooms. And here at The Angel Bakery our cupcakes get the opportunity to go to a great deal of them – lucky cupcakes!

Barnsley House, located near Cirencester, is just one of the many venues that our cupcakes have attended over the years. The former home of world renowned gardener, Rosemary Verey, Barnsley House is now a contempory and stylish country hotel making it the ideal country retreat. www.barnsleyhouse.com

We were asked to create some fairy cakes and one of our layered carrot cakes for the wedding of Katherine and James.

The fairy cakes were a mix of chocolate covered with a rich chocolate glossy ganache and spiced carrot fairy cakes with a cream cheese frosting.

Katherine and James’ chosen colour scheme was plum and ivory and so we decorated the little cakes with handmade sugar roses and trios of petite flowers with silver dragee centres.

To top it off we created one of our large layer cakes – a moist and deliciously light carrot cake. Decorated with cream cheese frosting and co-ordinating handmade sugar flowers to compliment the tier of cupcakes.

By the looks of things, the top cake proved just as popular as the cupcakes!

The photographer on the day was Paul White, an award winning photographer who creates some amazing images. Check out his website www.paulwhiteweddings.com

Goodbye 2010 – Hello 2011

December 29th, 2010

So 2010 is drawing to a close, and here at The Angel Bakery we’ve taken a bit of a Christmas breather. We’ve eaten lots of turkey, drunk a little champagne, and reflected on what’s been our busiest year yet.

The past twelve months really have been a bit of a whirlwind. We’ve baked thousands of cupcakes, met hundreds of wonderful new customers, and had enormous fun to boot. Here are some of the highlights of the year.

SPRING

As we entered 2010 and another year of cupcake creating, we had a lot of fun events lined up as well as our fortnightly stint at Cirencester Farmers Market. And with a full order book for weddings and corporate events, we were off to a flying start.

In March we had a little taste of celebrity when we were asked to provide cupcakes for a Hello! photoshoot with Jackie Lewellyn-Bowen. Imagine our excitement when our creations featured in the glamorous ‘Oscars’ edition of the magazine’s glossy pages. They looked lovely – and Jackie and her daughters pretty amazing too!

We were also delighted to support the Cotswold Cupcakes, a lovely group of energetic women who power walked their way to the finishing line in the Playtex Moonwalk in London.  We created a special ‘Moonwalk’ cupcake and the proceeds from the sale of this cake raised £198 for the Breast Cancer Awareness appeal.  Thank you to everyone who bought the cupcakes and to the Cotswold Cupcakes – you rock!

SUMMER

For The Angel Bakery, summer equals weddings, and 2010 was no exception. We had our creativity tested to the hilt, baking cupcakes in a multitude of different flavours and designs. From ‘Tiffany Blue’ to ‘Hollywood Glamour’ themed weddings, we invented beautiful cupcakes for lots of lovely couples, all of whom seemed to approve of our wares! Our wedding cupcakes were provided with some fantastic backdrops by a series of beautiful Cotswold venues including The Great Tythe Barn in Tetbury, Kingscote Barn, Cripps Barn and Berkley Castle.

In June we were at the Cheltenham Food Festival – our return visit to this fab foodie event.  Lots of Angel Bakery fans returned to get their cupcake fix, and our new seasonal flavours range proved a huge hit. The French Apricot, Raspberry and Chocolate Mint cupcakes went down a treat, and we were soon sold out – a sure sign of customer approval!

We ran a stall at the Painswick Wearable Art Parade   in August, with no idea what we were letting ourselves in for! It featured some of the craziest get-ups we’d ever encountered in the Cotswolds, and made us feel distinctly under-dressed. We’ll know to make more of a sartorial effort next year! Luckily our cupcakes went down a storm, and it was all great fun. If you didn’t get to go this year, make sure you attend in 2011. It truly is a spectacle, and promises to be even bigger and better than before.

 AUTUMN

It’s always thrilling to gain recognition from people within the industry, so imagine our delight when we were shortlisted for the finals of the National Cupcake Awards. Our cupcakes rubbed shoulders with the very best from around the UK, and whilst we just missed out on this occasion, we’re all fired up to give it another go in 2011!

One of our favourite annual occasions is the Tetbury Food Festival – it’s always great to support an event that promotes good quality, local food. We consider ourselves very lucky to have this brilliant festival on our home turf, which started in 2007 with a handful of stalls.  Since then it’s mushroomed in size, with more and more producers clamouring to attend.  Luckily we managed to snaffle a spot in 2008, and have had a stall there every year since – each time being bigger and better than the last. And it’s always useful that our kitchen is just down the road – perfect for when frantic calls for yet more cupcakes come in from those manning the stall!

 WINTER

We went distinctly upmarket with one of our winter orders, when world-renowned interior designer Nina Campbell asked us to supply cupcakes to the team working on her latest project. The Ellenborough Park Hotel and Spa will be Cheltenham’s first 5 star hotel, and with a multi-million pound renovation nearing completion, will welcome its first customers in February 2011. Reservations are already open, and we’ll be hoping for plenty more cupcake sales so we can afford a night of luxury at the hotel!

Our ovens carried on working at full capacity during December, with several winter weddings to supply.  And for those who struggled through the snow to get to the final Cirencester Farmer’s Market of the year, our Chocolate Hazelnut, Spiced Carrot, Amaretto and Chocolate Ginger cupcakes provided a tasty boost during freezing conditions!

Luckily, use of a four wheel drive helped us fulfil all our Christmas orders. The country’s entire transport network may grind to a halt in bad weather, but it takes more than a few inches of snow to stop The Angel Bakery in its tracks!

Our order books for 2011 are already filling up, so it looks as though we’ll have plenty to occupy us in the New Year. And as we look forward to our 4th year of cupcake ‘busy-ness’, we’d like to thank all our wonderful customers for their support.

 Here’s to a cupcake-filled 2011!

Vintage and Cake

October 25th, 2010

In September 2009, Tetbury was lucky enough to have a new addition to it’s high street in the form of Qetty Bang Bang – a fabulous vintage clothing boutique run by founder and creative director, Kerry Spurry.

We were asked by Kerry (Qetty) to create some canape cupcakes for her launch party and since then we have supplied cute little bites for other special events at her amazing boutique.

We will be teaming up with Qetty again on Sunday 7th November for another of her very special ‘invitation only’ shopping events.

If you would like to receive a personal invitation by Royal Mail, which will include a discount of 15% off all clothing, and Alex Monroe jewellery too, please send your name and address to info@Qettybangbang.co.uk

Qetty Bang Bang will be showcasing their new gift ranges from Miss Budd, Faux Kiss, Aiga Ceramics, the Curious Chocolate Company and we will be there with some delicious canape cupcakes accompanied by a glass of something special.

With a wide array of fabulous vintage designs and jewellery to choose from this is the perfect opportunity to get ahead for Christmas without the headache!

The Angel Bakery has fans down under!

October 25th, 2010

It takes a brave bride to organize a wedding from as far away as Australia, but that is exactly what Kate did when she organized her wedding back in August.  Kate contacted the Angel Bakery having seen our cakes on our website and booked us there and then.

The wedding took place at The Bear at Rodborough and the theme was vintage.  Kate’s favourite cake is coconut so we made sure we had that in her chosen mix and they were topped with petite flowers, pale pink roses and fresh strawberries.

On their return to Australia, Kate sent a wonderful email…

“We have just returned from our Honeymoon and are back in Australia. I just wanted to send you an email thanking you for the amazing cupcakes you made for our wedding on the 12th at the Bear of Rodborough. Oh my god, they were soooo nice. People are still talking about them. They were the nicest cupcakes i have ever had (including my own, and as an obsessive baker that really hurts). They looked so pretty on our sweets table (i’ll send you a photo when i get them) and then the flavour was magnificent. All my family are big foodies and we were all blown away. I would beg for the recipes but i suspect they would be a trade secret!

Write a recipe book, please! Beautiful, amazing, fresh and such lovely ingredients you can really taste.

Many thanks, i’ll remember them for ages.”

Come along on Monday and watch teams of men and women carry 60lb & 35lb woolsacks up and down a 4 in 1 hill with a few spills on the way no doubt!  The Woolsack Races has been run for over 30 years as an official race event with records being entered in the Guinness Book of Records

Trendy Cupcakes

May 14th, 2010

The Angel Bakery was the original bakery to bring cupcakes to the Cotswolds and then we were the first to sell Whoopie Pies. Now we find that we are on trend with our latest cupcake flavour combination, Salted Caramel. The sweet/salt combo is now a big flavour in the cupcake capital, the U.S.A

Here at The Angel Bakery we are always trying out new flavours for our cupcakes and we like nothing more that whipping up different varieties. Our Salted Caramel cupcake is one that we have done for some time now and it is good to hear that even in our humble kitchen we are trendy!
